April is National Volunteer Month, but for many BNSF employees, volunteering is a passion all year long. Sandra Maria Garcia, MiM, public affairs manager, is one example. She’s a dedicated advocate for young women and girls and was recently awarded the Woman of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of the Texas and Oklahoma Plains. Garcia was honored for her dedication to empowering women and girls through leadership and service, from advocating for women’s education to shedding light on the adversity women face. She is also active with the Young Women’s Leadership Academy Foundation, Texas Wesleyan University President’s Advisory Board, Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas and the Cuidado Casero Foundation. Thank you to Garcia and all BNSF employees who donate their time and talents to their communities. Members of the Heartland Diversity Council at our Memphis, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, terminals pulled together to make a meaningful impact on local women’s shelters. The Birmingham team partnered with Jessie’s Place and the Memphis team partnered with YWCA of Memphis. Together, the teams donated supplies and essentials to their women’s shelters with the intention of supporting those in need while honoring the strength and resilience of women everywhere. #communityinvolvement #NationalVolunteerWeek

Our people are part of a team that strives to be the best in everything we do, and we honor their accomplishments at our annual Employees of the Year ceremony. This year’s ceremony was held April 24 in Fort Worth, where we recognized those who raised the bar in safety, service and innovation in 2023. We're proud to participate with The American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in a pilot program of the Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS). The program will allow BNSF train dispatchers represented by ATDA to report close call events confidentially through a non-punitive process. Reports will be de-identified and sent to a peer review team, which will then develop recommendations to help improve rail safety. “We hope this program will further empower our employees to provide confidential feedback on critical safety issues in an actionable, timely manner," BNSF President and CEO Katie Farmer said. BNSF takes sustainability seriously, and that’s why we've committed to achieving a 30% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030.   One of the ways we’re working to achieve this goal is by continuing to improve the fuel efficiency of our locomotives.
