Thirty years ago, our industry decided that the only acceptable number of people to lose or hurt on a construction site is zero. We worked tirelessly on a rigorous campaign to prevent physical accidents, investing money, time, and expertise to ensure that everyone who shows up for a day's work returns home safe and sound.   There's no reason we can't do the same for mental health as we have with physical safety. Lives are at stake, and it's past time we give this problem the attention and focus it demands.   The painful truth is that among job occupations in the United States, the construction industry has one of the highest rates of suicide—twice as high as the general population. That's a heartbreaking statistic that we can change. But we also know that we can't do it alone.   Our Bechtel team is mounting a "big tent" effort, calling on our peers and partners across the industry to join us in the search for solutions. Recently, we announced a new, multi-year partnership backed by a $7-million pledge to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leading experts in suicide prevention, to support this effort.   I'm confident that together, we can find effective ways to support the overall well-being of the men and women who do the essential work of building our world. Congratulations to our team at the Hanford Vit Plant on successfully completing the first test glass pour from Melter 2! This glass was safely poured into a stainless-steel container that's specially designed to hold vitrified radioactive and chemical waste.   Earlier this year, the #Bechtel team at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) heated Melter 2 – the second of two of the world's largest nuclear waste melters – to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. From there, we added 30,000 pounds of frit to form molten test glass, which will eventually hold treated radioactive waste for safe storage. 🔥🧪   This achievement marks an important step as WTP prepares to transform legacy radioactive and chemical tank waste that dates back to World War II and the Cold War, into a vitrified glass form for safe and secure disposal.   Thank you to the entire #Bechtel team for making this milestone and this historic project, possible! #ToTheExtraordinary

Last week, our Bechtel team co-sponsored a Congressional Nuclear Security Working Group (CNSWG) event on Capitol Hill to engage leaders in an important, timely discussion around nuclear security modernization. The event brought together key decision-makers, including #CNSWG co-chairs Rep. Chuck Fleischmann and Rep. Bill Foster, along with leaders from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and national laboratories.   For generations, #Bechtel has been entrusted by the U.S. government and governments around the world to design, build, and manage projects and sites that contribute to a safer, more secure world. Bechtel is a demonstrated partner delivering management and operations, engineering, procurement, and construction services to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for over 40 years.   Currently, we provide both the #DOE EM and #NNSA with management and operations support to some of their most critical facilities, including Pantex Plant, Y-12 National Security Complex, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. ☀️⚡We are excited to share that the Bechtel Corporation-built Cutlass Solar 2 facility in Fort Bend, Texas is now generating energy at full capacity—a milestone we achieved ahead of schedule. Congrats, team!👏 Together with our customer Sabanci Holding, we are sending enough clean, renewable energy to the grid to power 40,000 Texas homes—saving an estimated 600,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.🤝   Scott Austin, #Bechtel’s General Manager of Renewables and Clean Power, shares: "We're delighted to get Cutlass Solar 2 to maximum capacity to provide more renewable power for Texans, support America's energy transition, and help achieve the Lone Star State's goal to become the nation's largest producer of solar power."   Next up: we'll begin construction on Sabanci Holding's new Oriana Solar facility in Victoria County, TX, which is expected to power more than 34,000 homes with clean energy. 🚗⚡It's time to spark the electric vehicle revolution! As we accelerate toward a more electrically-powered future, the pace of deploying EV chargers is a critical step we need to address. 📰 In a new blog post, #Bechtel’s experts provide their thoughts on how we can accomplish this. Darren Hall, Electrification Specialist at #Bechtel, highlights the urgency: "Manufacturers want to sell more vehicles and meet the demand of commercial customers and consumers." The risk of electric vehicles becoming "stranded assets" looms large, especially for fleet owners who rely on these vehicles for essential services and revenue generation. Jessie Aubry, Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Lead at #Bechtel, emphasizes the risks we face if we don't deliver the EV infrastructure needed to power our communities: "It's a bus that is supposed to get kids to school that can't charge… Or a delivery truck that is not generating revenue." 🚀 Jack and Set is complete! ✅   Bechtel's Mobile Launcher 2 (ML2) team, in partnership with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, achieved an important project milestone by successfully lifting the launcher’s base to its operational height of 25 feet. This critical step, known as "Jack and Set," is a major milestone in the construction of ML2, which will support NASA’s pursuit to safely send astronauts to the Moon and beyond.   To complete this process, Bechtel’s team partnered with NASA to utilize their unique crawler-transporter, which has supported the Apollo and now Artemis missions.   “This is an incredible achievement,” said Michael Costas, Bechtel’s General Manager of Defense and Space. “Lifting a 2.6-million-pound launcher base more than 20 feet into the air, moving it nearly the length of a football field, and then setting it down safely at a height of 25 feet, requires both great skill and careful planning. Yesterday marked an important moment for our team as we launched our second Bechtel Australia Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) across our Australian operations. This second RAP underscores #Bechtel’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and building meaningful partnerships with First Nations communities in Australia.   To celebrate the launch, we held events across Australia at our offices in Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney, where we proudly unveiled the new RAP artwork by Dunghutti Biripi artist Wanita Lowe. 🎨   Reconciliation Australia's RAP framework guides our actions to make meaningful contributions to the nation's reconciliation movement. A RAP enables us to reflect on our role in supporting First Nations people and communities during our 70+ years of operating in Australia. Our new plan outlines how #Bechtel will expand access and opportunities for First Nations peoples.    At #Bechtel, we are committed to leaving a positive legacy in the communities where we live and work. Happy #ConstructionSafetyWeek! Today, we're shining a spotlight on the importance of #EmbracingEveryVoice. Open communication and active listening are key components of creating a safe work environment on our projects. This includes being honest and sharing how you’re feeling, which we know isn’t always easy. ⬇️ 💬 At Bechtel, we believe that caring for your mental health is just as important as prioritizing physical safety. Raising awareness of mental health, talking about it, and having these tough conversations is one way to start. In March, #Bechtel announced a new partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to confront the crisis of suicide in the construction industry. Tragically, about 5x as many construction workers lose their lives to suicide compared to the general population—one of the highest suicide rates among all professions in the U.S. Together, with AFSP and others across the industry, we will develop and deploy resources for 500,000+ construction workers over the next five years to start. More here on this: https://lnkd.in/e6z_QfCE 🗣️ In a panel conversation we hosted alongside AFSP and North America's Building Trades Unions, #Bechtel chairman and CEO, Brendan Bechtel underscored the importance of prioritizing mental health as part of our larger commitment to the safety and wellbeing of construction workers: “Let's imagine a future, hopefully no more than five years from now where people think about mental health and supporting people that are contemplating suicide. It's as natural an act for the people in our industry as putting on your hard hat. You don't go to work without your hard hat. Why would you go to work without thinking about a mental health toolkit?
